Bimbingan Perguruan Profesional Dalam TMK (BPPT)

Project:

Malaysia Teacher Training (BPPT)

Customer:

Ministry of Education, Malaysia

Project description:

Following the success of its teacher training programme in UK, FSBM in association with its partner, Prestariang Technology Sdn Bhd, introduced a similar programme in Malaysia. The courseware was adopted from the programme conducted in UK but customised to fit the Malaysian national school curriculum.

FSBM and Prestariang secured a contract in 2004 to train 100,000 out of the 280,000 teachers in the country. A total of 178 trainers were recruited. Training will be conducted in 89 training centers nationwide over a period of 2 years 9 months.

The aim of the programme is to equip teachers with the confidence and competence necessary to make effective pedagogical use of ICT in the classroom. Through this training, teachers will develop the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to make appropriate decisions about WHEN, WHEN NOT and HOW to use ICT effectively in meeting their teaching objectives and to support their continuing professional development. Ultimately, this will help improve the standards of pupils' achievement.

As part of their learning, teachers are required to develop actual scheme of works and lesson plans. These will be deposited into a Databank. The result is a central depository of actual teaching and learning materials that can be shared with all teachers. Post training, teachers can continue to access the materials, update and further deposit. The result is a sustainable source of "best materials" developed by teachers for teachers.

Technology employed:

The Expected Outcomes of the BPPT Training Programme are organised around 2 major fields of competencies:

(A)EFFECTIVE TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT METHODS

This focuses on teaching and assessment methods that have a particular relevance to the use of ICT in subject teaching.  Teachers will have opportunities to practise, in the classroom, those methods and skills and to discuss their progress with trainers and with their peers.

(B)TEACHERS' KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF, AND COMPETENCE WITH ICT

This sets out the knowledge and understanding of, and competence with, ICT necessary to support effective teaching.  Teachers should become competent in using this knowledge in their subject teaching.
